Tom “Cruise”

Or just “Cruise” without the Tom.  It has officially been cruise season in Seattle for a couple weeks now.  Every Friday, Saturday, & Sunday there is a different cruise ship docked a mere 1 1/2 blocks from my window, adding to my glorious view. Ignore the construction on the roofdeck next door, I’m still trying to figure out if they are removing the deck or rebuilding it…

One of these days I’m gonna just pack my bags and walk the 1/2 a block to the pedestrian bridge that takes me directly into the cruise ship terminal, buy a last minute room and sail away for a week..  One day, one day, one da……….Oh! Sorry!  Got lost in the daydream, back to the task at hand.  Until that day happens though, I find myself staring at the different boats that dock and analyzing them.  I’m studying the different features of each boat.  Which ones look new/old? Which ones seem to have a better pool?  The one currently docked in the picture above loses big points for having some tacky fake plastic-type palm trees on the top deck, however they gain points for a totally awesome two-story twisty water slide!  I may want to cruise, but no one says I have to be boring why I do it!  Now if those tacky fake palm trees turn into an awesome water feature that sprays water, ala the raining trees at the edge of the wave pool at Wild Water Rapids (You VB peeps know what I’m talking about), well then those fake palm trees go from totally sucky to totally fabtastic!!

The strange thing about these cruise ships parked right outside my windows is that I rarely see them leave.  I never seem them dock since they come in overnight or in the wee hours of the morning when my lazy butt is still snug as a bug in a rug in my bed, but they normally depart in the evening hours.  I could be sitting on my couch eating dinner and look over and see the ship, then 15 mins later glance out the window and it’s gone, never having noticed it launching from the dock.  How is that a ginormous moving vessel can slowly crawl across the water out of view while I’m sitting 500 yards from it and I don’t even notice?  Oh well, guess it’s just going to be one of life’s mysteries.

Who’s ready to cruise??

Staying in…

Have you ever had a weekend where you ignored friends and all the events going on around you and just stayed home?  That’s what I did this weekend, and it was so nice.  It’s amazing how productive you can be when you ignore text messages, sign off chat, & turn off the TV.  Saturday I woke up early, mostly because the sun starts rising at 5;30am now making it hard to sleep in.  I fought the urge to turn on the TV and veg on the couch and instead cranked up some music and go to work.  I cleaned the week old pile of dishes in the kitchen, did the laundry that had been piling up for weeks and weeks, changed linens on the bed, even washed all the pillow covers & blankets from the couch.  Cleaned out my closet, purged 4 pairs of shoes (this is a HUGE accomplishment for me), and picked out paint colors; because I’m determined to get my apartment painted sometime this summer.  Saturday night came and went, I cooked dinner, read a magazine, and was in bed with a book by 11:45pm, and asleep by 12:30.   Today I got up at a decent time again.  It’s amazing how long a day is when you are out of bed before noon.  Although I did watch a little TV this morning (had to catch up on SNL) I managed to still be productive and do something that I’ve been saying I was going to do since January!  I finally cleaned out my storage unit.  I filled two big boxes for goodwill and reorganized so that an avalanche doesn’t occur every time I open the door.  Even painting my nails this evening put a smile on my face at how productive I was this weekend.   Sure I spent my entire weekend at home, only leaving the house to walk the dog, but I’m so proud and content on all the things I accomplished.  Sure there’s still a ton of things on my ever growing to-do list, but babysteps.  Next weekend I’ll be back to my partying ways…hope the suns decides to join me!

Double-time

Well, as promised in my previous post I double-timed it at the gym yesterday.  Sure most people may think of it as just a normal gym trip, but for “me” it was doublet-timed.  I started out by walking to the gym, a nice brisk walk.  1.4 miles round trip.  Then I did 30 mins on the elliptical, and even went up to resistance 7!  mostly I stay between 1-3…I’m lazy.  Then I pressed on and hopped on the dreaded treadmill for 30 mins where I restarted the Couch to 5K program which I vowed to complete last year in this post, Off the couch…

So, over a year ago I blogged about doing the Couch to 5K program and losing weight, yet here I sit a year later probably about 5 lbs heavier and never making it past day 3 in the program, but after making my 30 before 30 list I’ve finally got the kick in the butt I needed.  Been great about going to the gym, eating healthy, and even cracked open that book that calls you a fat -ass and basically makes you feel like such a fat slob it scares you into becoming thin, Skinny Bitch.

I’m on a roll!…which is funny to say since those are the exact things I hope to get rid of…fat rolls that is…haha. I kid I kid, well not really, but you know.   Anyway, hope everyone is having a happy healthy week!

Sleep Overdose

First let me start this post with a confession.  I did not go to the gym or workout today.  In fact, not only did i not work out at all but I also ate a bunch of crappy food.  I feel like a blob right now.  I will be at the gym tomorrow double-time.

Now on to the real issue.  I have a sleeping problem.  I am the complete opposite of an insomniac, I sleep too much!  Seriously, I think I could sleep for an entire week with nothing but breaks to walk the dog, use the restroom, and maybe grab a snack.  I sleep sooo much.  One night last week I got 12 good hours of sleep at night, then woke up, worked, and then as soon as work day was over took an easy 3 1/2 hour nap on the couch.  Two hours later I crawled into bed for the night and fell swiftly asleep.

The funny thing is that I don’t “require” a ton of sleep to function.  There are times – mostly nights before I’m travelling – where I only get 2-4 hours of sleep and then function the whole next day just fine.  When I travelled to Korea last fall I got 3 hours of sleep the night before I left and then slept for a total of 45 mins on the 12 hour flight.  After being awake for 24+ hours I finally got a little tired, slept perfectly through the night and avoided jetlag completely.

Last night I slept for a quality 8 hours, then got up and “went” to work.  At 6pm I laid on the couch and promptly dozed off and slept till 8pm.  I set an alarm for 7pm to just take a power nap, but then hit snooze for an hour till I finally decided to get on with my life at 8pm.  I had to move my alarm clock in my bedroom to my dresser across the room which now requires me to get out of bed to turn it off.  It’s not that I don’t hear my alarm (*cough *cough like some people I know…) but I get out of bed, reset the alarm for a later time and climb back in bed and go right back to sleep.

If it wasn’t for work or plans on the weekends I could easily sleep for 12+ hours every night and still take a good nap on the couch in the middle of the day.  People have told me to take vitamins, I do.  People have told me to work out more or in the morning to get my energy up, I do.  I could go to an intense workout at the gym then come home and sleep on the couch for 3 hours.

I am getting overdosed on sleep.  Perhaps it’s a medical issue or perhaps I’m just lazy and a really good sleeper.   All I know is that my sleep overdose is severely hindering my productivity.  I make big plans to get errands done, or clean the dishes from last night and instead I fall asleep on the couch and procrastinate for another day.

Does that show “Intervention” ever work with sleep addicted people.  Is there a support group?  There are 10 step programs for alcoholics and over eaters, but what about sleepaholics.  Hello, my name is Maria and I’m a sleepaholic.  Help!

21 days

Most research shows that it takes 21 days to make something a habit.  My goal is to get back into the exercise habit, it’s been way way too long since it’s been a good habit for me.  21 days of doing something active.  I just passed day 3, and now I’m craving exercise.  In fact I almost worked out twice today, just for the heck of it, but instead I took a nap.  Oh well, I’m trying.   Day one I went to the gym that I pay $40/month for and never use.  Day two I tried hot yoga for the first time.  Day three I took a brisk 2.8 mile walk around Greenlake with Lane.  My Nikes kicked off by the couch are becoming a normal scene in my apartment and I’m liking it.   3 days down, 19 to go to make this habit.  Wish me luck!

I’m feelin’ hot hot hot!

This evening I tried Hot Yoga for the very first time.  By “hot” I mean 95 degrees hot.  If you know me at all you know that I hate the heat.  I keep my thermostat at a brisk 65 degrees (if not lower), and break a sweat when it’s only 72 degrees with no humidity outside.  Thank goodness I don’t have to endure those steamy Virginia summers anymore.  Why? might you ask would I put myself into a 95 degree room to do yoga?  Well, I’ve been wanting to get into Yoga (it’s on my 30 Before 30 list) and I’ve read and heard of the great detox benefits of steamy hot yoga so figured I’d give it a try.   It was fabulous and miserable all at the same time.  I was stretching muscles I didn’t know I have, trying quite unsuccessfully to get myself into positions I didn’t know were possible and sweating out of places that I didn’t know could sweat.  I swear I saw beads of sweat coming straight out my shins.  My shins!!  It was quite an experience and I highly recommend it.  As my tank & shorts hang in the bathroom to dry (yes they were 100% soaked thru, gross I know) and my body is already feeling sore from the craziness I put it through today, I’m already looking on the schedule for the next class I’m going to attend.   Have you tried hot yoga lately?

30 before 30!

Recently I’ve been making plans for the next couple years and telling people “It’s something I want to do before I’m 30”.  It scares me that the day I turn 30 is less than 2 years away and there are so many things I want to experience and accomplish before then. Time is ticking away and the list of things I want to do is just getting longer.   In no particular order here are 30 things I want to do before I’m 30…

  1. Backpack around Europe, preferably alone.  Nothing against my friends, but I just want the experience.
  2. Lose 30lbs and keep it off.  Anyone have any motivational tricks?
  3. Jump out of a flying plane, aka SkyDive!
  4. Grow my hair long and donate it to a good cause.
  5. Try being a Vegetarian/Pescatarian…just try it.
  6. Become 100% debt free
  7. Join the Hokie Club, been meaning to do this for a long time.
  8. Get a nice digital SLR camera and really learn how to use it
  9. HUGE downsizing of my possessions.  Living in a tiny hotel room with nothing but what I fit in one suitcase for 2 months really made me realize I don’t need as much as I have.
  10. Volunteer more.
  11. Hike a mountain trail
  12. Kayak in a Washington Lake
  13. Start a side business, Social Media/Event Management for small businesses
  14. Learn to ski, obviously snowboarding was not for me
  15. Run a 5K, the entire thing!
  16. Bike more and farther
  17. Read more & watch less TV.  I’ve got half of that done.
  18. Cancel cable…who needs it with Netflix & Hulu.
  19. Dance more, take a class.
  20. Take up Yoga, I need some relax time
  21. Make a real effort to try online dating.  Who knows, maybe I’ll meet the man of my dreams.
  22. Go to Hawaii
  23. Save more money.
  24. Get Lane certified as a therapy dog and work with Alzheimer patients
  25. Drive along the Olympic Peninsula
  26. Hire a house cleaning service, I hate cleaning
  27. Stay in the same apartment.  If you know me and my moving habits you know this will be a big accomplishment.
  28. Pass the final section of the NCIDQ and become licensed in WA.
  29. Learn to french braid my own hair…this will become useful as I’m growing it out to donate it.
  30. TBD…gotta leave space for something!
Let operation “Do things before I turn 30!” begin.

Hell to the No

Even if you’re the biggest Glee hater, this song is too fabulous to pass up.   This is an original song performed on Glee and I had forgotten about it till today I found out it was available on iTunes, yes people, I paid $1.29 + tax for this and it is worth every penny.  Just listen, it’s a gem.

My Favorite Swedish Furniture Store

Who doens’t love Ikea?  The cheap-but oh so cute-furniture, adorable lamps, fabulous textiles, delicious meatballs and so much more.  It’s like Disney World for the home decorator, love it!   This song, which I found courtesy of Young House Love when they posted it on FB, is just the right amount of satire and truth about Ikea.  I think I’ll add this to my “driving to Ikea” playlist.  Yes, I have one of those, don’t judge me.  Enjoy!

Truths

My brother-in-law’s brother (that’s a mouth full) Brad posted this on Twitter today, and I got such a kick out of how true it is that I just had to share with the blogosphere.
