A wise girl once told me…

…”One in, one out!”.  When you buy something new for your wardrobe (shoes, clothes, accessories, etc) you should get rid of something.  This is called the “One In. One Out.” rule.   My wise and disturbingly organized sister over at Innovatively Organized (iOrganized Blog) recites this rule to me everytime I even mention that I’m going shopping, especially when it comes to shoes.  Yep, she’s a professional, and a damn good one at that, so I guess she sort-of knows what she’s talking about.

Yesterday I decided it was time to splurge a bit with my birthday money, christmas money, and overtime pay from work and headed to the outlet mall for a marathon shopping day.  I don’t normally invite friends because I’m fairly certain they can’t handle my kind of shopping, I think that’s a special trait that only my mother and sister have.  I invited a friend anyway, and she was smart and drove herself, which was a good idea, because she lasted about an hour, whereas I was there for almost 9!  There is nothing wrong with 9 hours of shopping, it’s a great work out!  I carried heavy bags, even broke out a sweat a few times in stores that had their heat cranked up.  Only had to make one extra trip to the car to drop off bags, and was able to carry eveyrthing from the car to the apartment in one trip when I got home, so I’d say the day was a booming success.

I love coming home after a huge shopping trip (or in my case, the morning after, since I was exhausted last night) and opening all your bags, making piles on the bed and going through the days purchases.  I always retry things on before removing tags because lord knows those stores have skinny mirrors that make everything look fabulous but then you get home and think “this isn’t flattering at all, why would I buy this?”  So, I spend a few hours trying on recent purchases and decided what is really worth it and what isn’t.  I normally try to take one or two things out of my closet for goodwill as I’m putting in my new items, but I never truly abide by the “one in, one out” rule.  I mean seriously; if I bought 4 pairs of shoes (which I may or may not have done yesterday) am I really suppose to get rid of 4 pairs?  I’m not 100% sure I have 4 pairs I can part with.

Today  though I am listening to my sister.  Maybe because tomorrow is her birthday and I feel like being nice, or maybe I just really missed her nagging me while I was in Korea for all those months, either way, I’ll admit that there is a method to her madness and I’m doing a true “one in, one out” purge.  Heck, I’m so motivated I may even try on every single thing in my closet and get rid of anything that doesn’t fit, or I haven’t worn in the past year.  Then I’ll call my sister and tell her how good I was and how much stuff I cleaned out of my closets and I’ll ask her if she wants to come take anything before I head off to goodwill.  She normally takes a few sweaters, shoes, etc that don’t fit me anymore or are more her style than mine.  I wonder if she truly lives by the “one in, one out” rule?
