What is this “valentine’s day” you speak of?

(I posted this on Feb 13th, but it got deleted, so I’m reposting…enjoy!)

What is the big deal? Someone asked me this morning if I had someone special to spend Valentine’s Day with? My answer was “What the hell is Valentine’s Day?” The person looked at me in shock, not getting my scarcastic tone as if I really had never heard of the day. Of course I have heard of Valentine’s Day, it’s hard not to with retail stores, advertisments, etc shoving it down your throats as soon as you finish your Christmas dinner. I just choose not to acknowledge it, for many reasons. Sure when I was in elementary school we bought those stupid little valentine’s and you wrote every single person’s name on one from your second grade class, then you walked around the room and splipped them into each and every handmade envelope or box that you made earlier in the week as an art project. I can’t remember a single valentine I ever got that meant something, or even who half the kids were in my second grade class, but what I do remember is how every year some girl would end up crying because she didn’t get a valentine from a certain boy in the class, or how fights would break out on the playground because some boy liked another girl more than her. As I get older, I am beginning to think that Valentine’s Day may have been invented to introduce children at a young age of the harsh reality of love. (I am laughing out loud as I typed that last line!) Honestly though, what is Valentine’s day? According to this 3 1/2 minute video on history.com it has no real origin. Although I particularly like the part where ancient romans whipped young girls with raw animal skin to bestow fertitiliy. If that doesn’t scream love I don’t know what does. I’ve been in relationships, in fact I’ve had a serious boyfriend for 5 of the past 8 Valentine’s day, yet have only really celebrated one of them, and that was my senior year of high school. I was young and thought I had met my soulmate. Can I add naive as well…although I had met one of my best friends, but that is another story. Either way, I don’t care for the holiday, I don’t even flinch when it passes by whether I have a significant other or not. It’s commericialized out the wazoo and I feel that more people break up around this time of year because someone forgot to buy a gift, or plan something special. If you are truly in love with someone why do you have to wait for a calendar to tell you a specific day to do something special. If you sit around all year waiting for Valentine’s Day to treat the person in your life special, then you’re an idiot! Valentine’s Day, Schmalentine’s Day! As far as I am concerned it’s February 14th, and hooray, this year it is a Saturday. I plan to go snowboarding, hang out with friends, and go on with my life like any other Valentine’s Day. I do want to add that this is not some rant because I am single, my take on the day would be exactly the same if I was single, dating, or even married. I don’t ever plan to celebrate the holiday. So all you guys out there that I may one day date or marry, you can relax knowing that while all your loser friends are out buying cards, flowers, and chocolates on Feb 13th you can sit back and drink a beer, because February 14th is just another ordinary day on the calendar and always will be.
